Get Organized: An Introduction to Financial Planning

Entry level financial planning designed for those who have never really taken the time to make sense of their financial situation. Learn how to maximize your income and organize your spending so that you are on the fast track toward achieving your goals.

Is this right for you?

This level of service is geared toward those who are completely new to financial planning. This is a great introduction to help you identify your financial goals, as well as make sure the financial decisions you make today are in line with your long-term plans.

The clients who benefit the most from the Get Organized session are those that still have credit card debt and/or student loans and minimal retirement savings. If you are further along in your financial planning needs, you should consider the Comprehensive or Custom Financial Planning packages instead.

What’s included?
  • 90-minute meeting* (in-person or via Skype) designed to help us both understand where you’re at today, as well as where you’d like to be. *Please allow an extra hour meeting time for couples.
  • Guidance in breaking down your financial priorities, as well as identifying solutions for the highest priority issues right now. (Spoiler alert, this is almost always student loans or credit issues.)
  • Help creating a personalized spending and saving plan that you can actually stick to.
  • Detailed Financial To-Do List summarizing the most pressing topics we discuss during our meeting.
  • Upkeep Sessions: Future financial planning needs can be addressed on an hourly basis, or you can always upgrade to Comprehensive Financial Planning when you’re ready.
What’s not included?
  • This session is not designed to cover comprehensive financial planning. 90-minutes flies by quickly, trust me. We will only have time to cover your highest priority financial needs and will not be able to address every important aspect of your overall financial picture.

Comprehensive Financial Planning

Concerned about retirement? Negotiating your salary or changing careers? Emergency funds, spending issues, saving for your child’s education (or dealing with your own student loans)? We’ll get everything under control–one step at a time. Even the less glamorous things, like having the right kinds of insurance and essential estate planning documents like a health care proxy—you’ll be fully covered by the time we’re done.

Is this right for you?

This level of service is geared toward those who are regularly saving each month (or aren’t yet, but could be), and aren’t quite sure how to focus their energy to achieve their goals.

The clients who benefit most from the Comprehensive Financial Planning package are usually entering an exciting new life stage and need help during the transition. Perhaps you’ve finally paid off your credit card debt, earned a promotion at work (accompanied by a nice raise), had a baby, or simply entered a new decade of life. If it’s time to finally feel in control of your finances, then this is the package for you.

What’s included?
  • Initial 2-hour meeting* (in-person or via Skype) designed to help us both understand where you’re at today, as well as where you’d like to be. *Please allow an extra hour meeting time for couples.
  • During this meeting we will develop a personalized, comprehensive overview of all of your financial goals, prioritized by importance.
  • Detailed financial to-do list, with specific how-to descriptions for each item on the list.
  • Objective and unbiased evaluation of your current accounts and policies.
  • Email support and ongoing guidance as you work your way through your financial to-do list.
  • Periodic check-in sessions (can be in-person or via Skype) to make sure you are on the right track, and to reevaluate your goals as needed.
  • Upkeep Sessions: Future financial planning needs outside the scope of the initial comprehensive planning session can be addressed on an hourly basis as needed.
What’s not included?
  • Comprehensive financial planning should be completed within 3- to 6-months of the initial meeting date. After 12-months, new financial planning needs will be addressed on an hourly basis.

Custom Financial Planning on an Hourly Basis

Hourly financial planning is financial planning on your own terms. Rather than following one of my pre-determined financial planning packages, hourly financial planning is available to everyone, and requires no specific time commitment.

Is this right for you?

When it comes to financial planning, there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes (outside of the in-person client meeting). As a result, most clients prefer to pay for an all-inclusive financial planning package.

Hourly financial planning is best suited for for those who know exactly what kind of support and help they need and require minimal hand-holding along the way. It is the ideal option for those who already have a handle on their financial situation, and just need a little extra expert advice or guidance on a specific financial question.

What’s included?
  • Consulting Session (in-person or via Skype): billable after the session is over at a rate of $295 per hour (prorated in 15-minute increments as needed). No package discounts apply for additional services.
  • Expert guidance on any financial questions you have.
  • Upkeep Sessions: We can schedule additional sessions whenever you need them.
What’s not included?
  • Hourly financial planning does not include follow-up email support or detailed financial to-do lists. These additional services are available by request and are billable at the hourly rate as described above.

Disclaimer: The one thing I don’t do (besides accept excuses) is provide investment advice.

I am a Certified Financial Planner, but I am not an investment advisor, nor do I ever intend to be. My reason is simple—investment advisors charge A LOT. Way too much. And research has shown they don’t add enough value to justify it. I keep all my investment accounts at Vanguard. I use their risk tolerance questionnaire and have an allocated portfolio full of their index funds and ETFs. Need help with that? Call Vanguard. Their customer service is top notch and you’ll hardly pay any fees. The bottom line is, I don’t want to get paid to give investment advice. So I don’t. (In case you’re wondering, I don’t sell anything at all. It’s not my style. And I’m not affiliated with Vanguard either, I just like them.)
